Thousands of hacking attempts are targeted toward schools every week. Both data infiltration and cyber bullying are rising to alarming proportions. These result from the fact that academic collaborations are loosely regulated and school networks are more open than government or enterprise networks. Breaches on school networks can come from both internal and external sources. According to a recent survey conducted by CERT Coordination Center at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, there were cyber incidents in 68% of schools in the continental US in 2014. 31% of respondents said that they lack any formal awareness to detect cyber incidents and 40% stated they lacked any formal plans for responding to cybercrimes.
